It's crazy to see how far this over the top series of snuff films from Twisted Pictures has come. Kevin Greutert has done a pretty good job over the years keeping audiences confused regarding the series' story/plot line. Honestly, though, who cares? I mean it's Saw, audiences only watch it to see some crazy, gross ass gore.
The 3D in Saw 3D was done pretty well; not over the top, but still used effectively. Saw 3D, like most of the series, picks up directly from the last installment. In the previous Saw, detective Hoffman had inherited Jigsaw's legacy, and did a damn good job of it. Similar to the other installments, the introduction to Saw 3D is awesome. Every film opens with a gruesome scene tensely unfolding before the audience's eyes, and Saw 3D continues the tradition.
Saw 3D is reminiscent of Saw 5 in that it's focused on one person having to endure the pain, torment, and burden of saving others close to them. For followers of the previous films, there are quite a few returning faces from Saws 5 and 6 chiming in on Saw 3D's storyline. The premise of Saw 3D involves a man named Bobby (Sean Patrick Flanery) conveying his story to the nation about being a survivor of Jigsaw's traps. However, Bobby is lying about being a victim to gain fame and fortune. Bobby later learns his lesson as he is faced with a trap involving his wife and many others close to him.
The movie was great to see in 3D. I personally think that they could have done so much more, especially since the estimated cost on this movie was over 17 million dollars. A movie series with this many sequels is going to have some that flop, Saw 3D included. Saw 3D could have been so much more, but alas, they have failed as far as I'm concerned and wasted a few million dollars on returning actors/actress's who surely asked for a higher pay grade.
One redeeming scene involves Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington, who dies an awesome death through an amazing chain of events. Other than a few stand out scenes like that, Saw 3D is just another tired installment in a series of snuff films. They keep saying this is the final Saw, but if viewers continue to go to these movies, the studios will continue to churn them out each Halloween.
